Rev Limiters & ECU Calibration

A rev limiter is part of the engine-management strategy. An enquiry about changing it needs more detail than a requested RPM increase: the engine specification, its condition and the purpose of the change all matter.

Start with the reason for the change

Tell us whether you are investigating unexpected limiting, a modified engine or a specific calibration requirement. Include the engine, gearbox, existing software and any mechanical changes. Unexpected behaviour should be described as a diagnostic concern rather than assumed to be the normal limiter.

The earlier GAD website discussed rev-limit adjustments. That does not establish an appropriate limit for every engine or mean that simply increasing the number will improve a particular car. The useful question is how the requested change fits the complete specification.

Information for your enquiry

Provide your vehicle details, current rev limit if known, the conditions in which it occurs and your intended use. For a previously modified vehicle, describe the hardware and calibration history. We can then discuss the scope of the enquiry and whether any work is suitable for a mobile appointment.
